MD/Net

MD/Net: Atari ST WiFi that just works!

Microfirmware for the SidecarTridge Multi-device by Neil Rackett

Introduction

MD/Net turns your SidecarT into a wireless network adapter for your Atari ST, connecting it to your WiFi network. It reuses the WiFi credentials you already gave your SidecarT, so there is nothing extra to configure.

Networking on the ST uses STinG, driven by MD/Net's own driver, MDNET.STX, which appears as "WiFi".

Installation

1. SidecarTridge Multi-device

  1. Download the .utf and .json files below.
  2. Copy them to the /apps folder of your SidecarT's microSD card.
  3. In the Booster web interface, make sure you're connected to your WiFi, so MD/Net can use the same information to connect.
  4. On the Booster screen, press ESC for the app list and select the MD/Net app.
  5. To return to Booster, turn on your ST while holding the SELECT button on your SidecarT.

You'll know it's working because you'll see MD/Net: connecting... followed by MD/Net connected: <your ST's IP> on your ST's screen as it boots, before the GEM desktop appears.

2. ST

  1. Download sting-for-mdnet.zip below (a ready-to-go version of the standard STinG distribution).
  2. Extract the contents to the root of drive C on your ST's hard drive.
  3. On the desktop, run INSTALL.TOS from the cartridge.
  4. Reset your ST.
  5. That's it!

3. Get browsing

Any STinG-compatible software works. For browsing, I recommend my own LowWire fork of the HighWire browser, optimised to run on any computer in the ST family, in any resolution with no SpeedoGDOS, NVDI or other dependencies.

Then try one of these websites that still come in a form an ST can enjoy:

Have fun! And if you'd like more technical information, take a look at README.md.
