STDL: Atari ST DirectMedia Layer
An easier way to port SDL 1.2 games to the Atari ST, by Neil Rackett.
Introduction
STDL is a planar-native library for porting SDL 1.2 games to the Atari ST.
To avoid all of the performance issues associated with SDL on Atari ST, there is no chunky backbuffer and no c2p anywhere in the pipeline: ST interleaved planar is the native format, assets are converted offline, and spans, rects and blits are the primary verbs.
Anything that cannot be done cheaply in planar has been removed rather than emulated; see docs/limits.md.
The latest release includes support for overscan, the Xpad gamepad interface and hardware scrolling.
Using STDL
The easiest way to use add STDL to your project is to add it as a submodule, or add libstdl.a (MiNTLib) or libstdl-cmini.a (libcmini), to your C project.
For more information about this and using the integrated skill with your agent are in README.md.
Examples
There are some amazing open source games that have already been ported to the Atari ST using STDL, including:
- ST
- STE
- MegaST
- MegaSTE
